Media library of Mont de Marsan by Archi5

The Media Library, designed by Archi5, is a covered cultural square in the middle of the Bosquet barracks in Mont de Marsan, south of Bordeaux. Archi5 has “taken care to augment the dialogue with the place’s strong architectural whole. The building complies with the classical layout yet contrasts with its austerity by offsetting the system with a corner opening onto the city. Its facades reflect the surrounding barracks like a respectful, deferential mirror.”

A grassy incline surrounds the building, giving way to alternating transparent and glass reflecting facades. At night the building becomes a lantern, bringing the square to life.

The interior space on the ground floor is completely open and centres around a patio, inspired by Matisse’s paintings of acanthus leaves, and the forms of Alvar Aalto’s vases.

New works at the Gagosian Gallery.

‘Detached’ at London’s Gagosian Gallery features new work by Rachel Whiteread. The title refers to the process of abstracting or distancing from reality that is an intrinsic part of the artistic process.

Cast from generic wooden sheds, the sculptures recall the monolithic architectural and site-specific works for which Whiteread first became known, such as Ghost (1990), House (1993) and most recently, Boathouse (2010), installed on the water’s edge in Norway.
Other works included in the show belong to a new series cast from doors and windows in shades of rose and eau-de-nil. These watery, translucent works will be propped against or fixed to the walls, while a display of three vitrines provides a glimpse into the artist’s working process, juxtaposing a collection of found objects with small casts and maquettes.

Design Competition for a memorial to Hull’s lost trawlermen.

A ‘special place’ is wanted to mark and preserve the memory of the thousands of Hull’s trawlermen whose lives were lost at sea. The site chosen is on the water’s edge of the Humber, at St Andrews Quay, formerly St Andrews Dock, from where so many trawlermen cast off to sail to the northern fishing grounds.

The competition is open to individuals, design practices or teams of architects, landscape architects, artists and other professionals.

The deadline for receipt of Expressions of Interest is Friday 19 April 2013. Competition details can be found from STAND.
