Winning and shortlisted entries go on show at Sir John Soane’s Museum

Winning and shortlisted entries to the inaugural Architecture Drawing Prize are exhibited at Sir John Soane’s Museum, London, from 21 February until 14 April 2018. The prize is jointly organised by the museum, the World Architecture Festival, and architectural practice Make, and recognises both hand-drawn and digitally produced drawings, and works using a hybrid of traditional and contemporary techniques.

Winners in each of the three categories were announced at the World Architecture Festival in November 2017, selected from 166 entries by a jury comprising artists Ben Langlands and Nikki Bell; Narinder Singh Sagoo, Head of Design Communication at Foster and Partners; Ken Shuttleworth of Make Architects; Owen Hopkins of the Sir John Soane’s Museum; and Jeremy Melvin of the World Architecture Festival.

Submissions were evaluated on the basis of their technical skill, originality in approach, and ability to convey an architectural idea, whether for a conceptual or actual building project. “This is in the spirit of many great architects of the past from Palladio through John Soane to Le Corbusier and Cedric Price, who developed the device of drawing in different ways to advance the art of architecture”, say the organisers. “How is this happening now in our highly visually driven culture and with the many new tools available to us?”

Jerome Xin Hao, Memento Mori: A Peckham Hospice Care Home, winner in the hybrid category and overall winner

Christopher Wijatno’s ‘Deepwater Purgatory’ was the winning entry in the Digital category, while Dimitris Grozopoulos’ ‘Scenarios for a Post-Crisis Landscape’ won in the Hand-drawn category. Jerome Ng’s drawing ‘Memento Mori: A Peckham Hospice Care Home’ won in the category for Hybrid images, and was also given the overall top prize.
