Northwood School is a new £35m educational facility in the London Borough of Hillingdon. Jacksons Fencing was appointed by Lizard Landscape Design to supply and install a range of perimeter security systems for various parts of the site. One of the principal reasons for the selection of Jacksons Fencing was the easy availability of its technical documents, such as Q40s, specification sheets, dwg drawing files and product brochures. This streamlined the decision-making process for the project team, enabling it to collate product information quickly and draw firm conclusions on the best solutions for each area.

Double leaf Barbican Imperial gates

Jacksons’ Barbican Imperial®, Euroguard®, Featherboard and Hit & Miss style fences and gates are used to secure both the external perimeter and inner compounds. Working closely with Lizard Landscape Design, the Jacksons team was able to understand the project from the client’s point of view, enabling it to contribute to the specification process and offer alternatives if required.

Hit-and-miss fencing with steel posts

Chris Francis, Head of Commercial Sales at Jacksons Fencing, comments, “Low-level timber fencing was initially specified for an enclosure within the school grounds. However, after review, it was established that the fence was lower than what it securing. The Jacksons team was able to propose and subsequently design a bespoke, three-metre high, hit-and-miss fence with steel posts to provide the necessary protection while retaining the timber aesthetic required at the outset.”

Another crucial element on the project related to the large number of underground electricity and water services in the area. This prevented the team from excavating and fixing the fence posts with concrete in the traditional manner. Instead, the posts were bolted to concrete slabs to ensure a safe and secure perimeter.

Euroguard gates around stairwell

The school boundary is secured with Jacksons’ Barbican Imperial® fences and gates. They are fitted with finials to provide the aesthetic appeal and security protection required. Elsewhere, Euroguard® Flatform style of gates prevent unauthorised access to the base of a fire escape. The gates not only provide a visual deterrent, but also incorporate a push pad for emergency egress.

Double leaf courtyard gates

Jacksons’ Featherboard timber fencing provides a clear boundary between the main school and service yard. The aim is to protect students, teachers and visitors from delivery vehicles and other equipment. An added benefit of this solution is that it helps to discourage unwanted individuals from accessing school property.

Additional modifications were undertaken during the installation phase, including fitting bespoke raked panels under some of the gates to bridge the gap between the finished ground levels and those of the original topographical survey. The adaptations ensured that the original security parameters were not compromised. The second phase of the development will involve the installation of boundary fences to the school’s new sports fields.
