Scotland’s first museum of design has been insulated using roof and floor products from Kingspan Insulation
Roof and floor products from Kingspan Insulation form an integral part of Scotland’s first museum of design: V&A Dundee by Kengo Kuma & Associates. The BREEAM Excellent-rated building combines renewable energy technologies with a thermally efficient envelope. More than 6,500-square-metres of Kingspan Thermataper TT46 LPC/FM, together with 1000-square-metres of Kingspan Thermaroof TR26 LPC/FM have been used to insulate the flat roof and provide effective drainage falls.

Installed by Q9 Cladding Solutions, the high-performance insulation can achieve thermal conductivities as low as 0.022 W/m.K and is compatible with most mechanically-fixed single-ply waterproofing systems. Furthermore, both products are approved to Factory Mutual Research Standard 4470: 2016 for Class 1 Steel Deck Roof Assemblies and LPS 1181:Part 1. Kingspan Insulation’s specialist tapered roofing design team provided a detailed layout scheme for the products, ensuring that the build-up met the target thermal performance with minimum constructional depth. This also ensures that rainwater is effectively channeled off the roof space.
Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Floorboard is used to insulate the ground floor
Some 5,300-square-metres of Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Floorboard is used to insulate the ground floor. Kingspan Insulation has now released Kingspan Kooltherm K103 Floorboard as part of its Kooltherm K100 range of premium performance insulation boards, providing a thermal conductivity of just 0.018 W/m.K across all board thicknesses.
All three Kingspan Insulation products installed at the museum have been assigned the highest possible BRE Green Guide Summary Rating of A+. The insulation boards, manufactured at Kingspan’s facilities in Herefordshire and North Yorkshire, are also certified as ‘Excellent’ under the demanding BES6001 Responsible Sourcing Standard. As a result, they contribute toward the materials section of the building’s BREEAM assessment.
