Overall Winner and Education Building Award: Simon Sainsbury Centre, Cambridge; Architect: Stanton Williams (ph: Hufton & Crow)

Undaunted by a record number of entries, the jury of Denise Bennetts, Jason Flanagan, Steve Mudie, Paul Savidge, Ken Shuttleworth and Carl Turner for the 2018 Schueco Excellence Awards for Design & Innovation – now organised in association with Architecture Today – set about its task with gusto, quickly assessing and ranking potential contenders in each given category.

The criteria for assessment of the awards focussed on creativity, innovation, technical skill and creative collaboration: Does the project demonstrate design quality, whether at a macro and/or micro scale? Is there evidence of significant innovation in terms of design, detailing or constructional skills? Does the project show high levels of technical skill in its detailed design and/or assembly? Does the project demonstrate a productive and creative collaboration between the designer, specialist contractor and/or manufacturer?

The award-winners represent a broad range of work from around the UK and Ireland, from innovative extensions and refurbishments to bespoke residential and cultural projects, but all value the significance of good daylighting and energy performance in their design.
